In a nutshell

Both run the A20 Pro with 12GB of RAM and come in 256GB to 2TB. Past that they are different phones. The 18 Pro Max is a 6.9-inch slab with three 48MP cameras, a 4x telephoto and Face ID. The Duo folds out to a 7.6-inch screen, closes to a 5.4-inch phone, has two rear cameras with no telephoto and unlocks with Touch ID.

The 18 Pro Max suits you if the camera and battery matter most. The Duo suits you if you read, edit or multitask on your phone and want a tablet-sized screen that folds into a pocket.

Both are IP68 to 6 metres with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. The Duo adds a hinge and a folding inner screen, which is more to look after.

Water and dust:Both are rated IP68 to a depth of 6 metres for 30 minutes.

Frame:Aluminium unibody on the Pro Max, grade 5 titanium on the Duo with a hinge built from more than 100 components.

Inner screen:The Duo's folding screen is covered by a polymer rather than glass. Apple says it is up to 40% stiffer than other materials in the industry.

Our verdict

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want the best camera Apple makes this year and the longest battery in a normal phone shape. Buy the iPhone Duo if a 7.6-inch screen in your pocket changes how you use your phone, and you can live without a telephoto. The Duo goes on sale on 23 October 2026, so refurbished stock will take longer to arrive than for the Pro Max.
