In a nutshell
Same 6.3-inch screen, same three 48MP rear cameras, same aluminium unibody. Put them on a table and you'd need the colour to tell them apart. The 18 Pro's changes are a main camera with an adjustable aperture, the A20 Pro chip with a bigger vapour chamber, Apple's own C2 modem, three more hours of rated video playback and a 2TB option.
The 17 Pro suits you if you want the Pro screen and the 4x telephoto for less money. The 18 Pro suits you if you want control over depth of field in photos, need 2TB, or want the longest run of iOS updates.

Durability
Built the same way, with an aluminium unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and IP68 to 6 metres. The 18 Pro should get iOS updates for a year longer.
Water and dust:Both are rated IP68 to a depth of 6 metres for 30 minutes.
Frame and glass:Aluminium unibody and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front of both. Neither has a durability edge on paper.
Software support:Apple doesn't publish an end date. Going by launch year plus seven, expect updates until around 2032 on the 17 Pro and 2033 on the 18 Pro.

Performance
The A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometre process. Apple quotes 50% more memory bandwidth and up to 40% faster graphics than the A19 Pro. Both have 12GB of RAM.
Sustained speed:The 18 Pro's vapour chamber has three times the surface area of the 17 Pro's. That counts in long games and video exports, where heat is what slows a phone down.
Everyday use:Both open apps, edit photos and run Apple Intelligence without a wait. You'd need a benchmark to tell them apart day to day.

A draw on the panel. Same 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion screen, same resolution, same 3000-nit outdoor peak.

Dynamic Island:Smaller on the 18 Pro, and it can show three Live Activities at once.

Camera
Same 48MP main, ultrawide and 4x telephoto line-up. The 18 Pro's main camera can change its aperture, which Apple says is a first on iPhone.
Variable aperture:Six blades give four settings from f/1.48 to f/4.0. Wide open lets in more light and softens the background. Stopped down keeps more of a group or a landscape sharp.
Zoom:Both use a 48MP 4x telephoto that crops to 8x at what Apple calls optical quality. Reach is the same.
Selfies:18MP Center Stage front camera on both, so group shots widen without turning the phone.

Battery
The 18 Pro lasts longer and charges faster. Apple quotes 34 hours of video against 31 on the UK models.
Battery life:4056mAh against 3988mAh in the UK models. Three extra hours of rated video helps on a long day. It won't stretch to an extra day.
Charging:50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter on the 18 Pro, 20 minutes with a 40W adapter on the 17 Pro. Both do 25W on MagSafe and Qi2.

FAQs
Not if you already own a 17 Pro. The screen, cameras and RAM match. The gains are aperture control, three more hours of rated video, faster wired charging and a newer chip.
It changes how much light the main camera lets in. Apple's six-blade mechanism gives four settings from f/1.48 to f/4.0, so you choose between a brighter shot with a soft background and more of the scene in focus.
The 17 Pro came in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The 18 Pro adds 2TB. The availability section on this page shows what's in stock right now.

Pristine, Excellent, Great and Good. Pristine has zero blemishes and at least 90% battery health. Good can show noticeable wear on the casing but works perfectly. Every grade is TechCheck certified and comes with a 12-month warranty.
